Barium is a soft silvery -white metallic alkaline earth metal, with the chemical symbol Ba, and atomic number 56. The element derives its name from the Greek word "barys," meaning heavy, indicative of its high density. It is also harder than most alkaline earth metals. At room temperature, it remains in a solid state. Barium is highly reactive with air, forming a protective oxide layer on its surface, preventing further oxidation. It readily reacts with water to produce hydrogen gas and barium hydroxide. It also forms compounds with various other elements, including sulfur, carbon, and halogens - these compounds are toxic and must be hanfled with caution.

Barium was first discovered by the Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele in 1772, although its isolation in its pure metallic form wasn't achieved until the early 19th century by English chemist Sir Humphry Davy. The element derives its name from the Greek word "barys," meaning heavy, indicative of its high density.

One of the most significant applications of barium is in the form of barium sulphate (BaSO4). This compound is extensively used in the oil and gas industry as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. It enhances the density of drilling mud, allowing for more efficient drilling operations. Barium nitrate (Ba(NO3)2) is also utilised in the pyrotechnics industry for producing green-coloured fireworks. The characteristic green flame seen in fireworks results from the combustion of barium compounds.

Barium compounds are also commonly used in medical diagnostics, particularly in barium meals and barium enemas. Barium sulphate suspensions are ingested by patients to highlight the gastrointestinal tract during X-ray imaging, aiding in the diagnosis of digestive disorders. Barium is employed in the production of various electronic components, such as vacuum tubes and cathode ray tubes (CRTs). Barium oxide is used in the manufacture of special glasses for electronic applications due to its ability to absorb X-rays.
