Sodium, categorised by the chemical symbol Na (from the Neo-Latin word 'natrium'), is a chemical element, with the atomic number 11. It is an alkali metal, in group 1 of the periodic table (formerly known as ‘group IA’) and is described as a soft, silvery-white, and highly reactive alkali metal. Sodium quickly oxidises in air and intensely reacts with water. Therefore, it is stored in inert mediums like kerosene to prevent unintended reactions.
